Farrell’s Steakhouse & Pub is centered in Tacoma’s Historic Downtown District, inside the old Drake Building dating back to 1887. The Italianate style building was designed by architects William Farrell & Carl August Darmer. Selections for this project include late 19th Century inspired furnishings consisting of plush, intimate seating, antique mood lighting and steampunk elements that transport the patron back in time, evoking a sense of historical fantasy.
The neighborhood features bars, breweries and restaurants that attract a millennial crowd. A cafe, sports lounge, billiards room and conversation zones were added to draw in this demographic.
Design changes were made in order to provide better flow and function of the building. The men’s restroom was relocated next to the women’s and redesigned to be ADA compliant. The stage and billiards room were moved from the mezzanine levels to the ground floor, enabling access for customers with disabilities. An additional door was added to the first floor stairwell for fire escape access. The kitchen area was expanded and combined with the staff break room, closing the space off to public access. Tables, chairs and lockers were added to the staff break room, and a sink was added to the staff restroom. The cafe features ample seating with a walk-up window, allowing patrons to order food without waiting to be seated.
Additional features include a copper clad ceiling with metal grid, and a steampunk inspired sculpture fabricated for the metal grid knee wall.
